Traffic on the Kalawewa-Aukana road, which had been submerged for nine days due to the opening of the Kalawewa emergency spillway gates, is now operating normally from today (27), authorities said.
Engineers at the Kalawewa reservoir took steps to close the emergency spillway gates this afternoon as water levels in the Kalaoya receded, allowing the bridge near the Aukana temple to reopen.
The bridge had been submerged since the gates were opened on the 18th, forcing residents from nearby villages, including Aukana, Walawwegama, and Kalawewa, to use longer alternative routes.
With the closure of the spillway gates and the receding water, normal traffic flow has now resumed, easing the disruption for local communities.
