A woman has been arrested in Avissawella in connection with a large-scale Israeli job scam involving a former driver of the Sri Lanka Foreign Employment Bureau, police and Bureau officials confirmed.
The Special Investigation Unit of the Bureau had received multiple complaints about a driver who, after being dismissed from the Bureau, allegedly promised jobs in Israel and collected money from unsuspecting individuals across the country. Investigations revealed that the money, amounting to nearly one crore rupees, was deposited into the account of the arrested woman, who maintained a close relationship with the absconding driver.
The suspect was produced before the Avissawella Acting Magistrate today (26), who ordered her remand until tomorrow (27). The driver remains at large, and authorities have launched extensive efforts to apprehend him.
Bureau Chairman Kosala Wickramasinghe stated that the newly established police unit has already uncovered multiple foreign employment frauds and will ensure strict judicial action against offenders. He urged anyone affected by this scam to contact the Bureau immediately via 1989.
