The Disaster Management Department warns that the risk of tornado-like wind conditions in the Kurunegala District has increased due to the ongoing adverse weather across the country.
Kurunegala District Assistant Director of the Disaster Management Department, Viraj Disanayake, stated that several areas in the district have already been affected by powerful whirlwinds over the past few days, causing damage to property.
According to reports, tornado-like winds struck Kobeigane yesterday (24), while similar incidents were recorded twice in Wariyapola, and in Narammala and Nikaweratiya earlier this week.
As a result, 93 houses in Wariyapola, 16 in Nikaweratiya, and 7 in Kobeigane have been damaged, with most categorized as partially damaged.
Although no casualties have been reported from these incidents, a tornado that swept through Kobeigane on Friday caused damage to buildings at a preschool and left a female preschool staff member with minor injuries. Young children at the preschool were safely evacuated, officials said.
Authorities urge the public to remain vigilant as weather conditions continue to fluctuate.
