Samantha Namal Wijeratne, former Chairman of the Galenbindunuwewa Pradeshiya Sabha (PS), has been arrested by the Assets Investigation Division of the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption.

The arrest relates to a complaint concerning unexplained assets allegedly accumulated during his tenure as Chairman from 2011 to 2016. Investigators stated that Wijeratne failed to appear before the Commission to provide a statement regarding the inquiry.

He was arrested under Sections 126 and 127(1)(u) of the Anti-Corruption Act, No. 9 of 2023.

Wijeratne was produced before the Kahatagasdigiliya Magistrate's Court yesterday (24), which ordered his remand until October 31 for failing to cooperate with the investigation.
