Six Sri Lankan seafarers who had been detained in Eritrea have been safely repatriated to Sri Lanka following the coordinated efforts of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment, and Tourism, together with the Sri Lanka Mission in Egypt.
According to the Ministry, the repatriation process was carried out in close consultation with Eritrean authorities. Acting under the instructions of the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment and Tourism, Vijitha Herath, Sri Lanka’s Ambassador in Cairo, who is concurrently accredited to Eritrea, travelled to Asmara to oversee all necessary formalities and arrangements for the seafarers’ return.
The group arrived at the Bandaranaike International Airport in Colombo on Friday (24), where they were received by officials from the Ministry.
The Ministry expressed its appreciation to the Eritrean Government and all other parties involved for their assistance in ensuring the safe return of the Sri Lankan nationals.
