Muslim civil society groups highlighted that many Muslim nurses in government hospitals continue to face difficulties in wearing uniforms that align with their religious identity, particularly covering their heads and legs
They warned that this has discouraged Muslim women from entering the nursing profession and even caused some qualified nurses to withdraw from their careers.
Minister Vijitha Herath responded stating that existing regulations do not prevent nurses from maintaining their religious identity through approved uniform modifications. He emphasized that cultural or religious practices should not be seen as barriers to joining the nursing service.
