The Teachers and Principals Trade Union Alliance has expressed firm opposition to the government’s decision to extend school hours by an additional 30 minutes under the newly proposed education reforms.
Speaking at a press conference in Colombo today (24), representatives of the Alliance stated that the proposal to change the school closing time from 1.30 p.m. to 2.00 p.m. has been introduced without adequate consultation or any evidence-based study.
They noted that the decision has been met with strong resistance from teachers, students, and parents across the country, stressing that such changes must consider the welfare and practical challenges faced by the education community.
Issuing a warning, the Alliance said that if authorities fail to withdraw or reconsider the directive before November 7, they will resort to a one-day strike at the beginning of the next school term in December.
