Deputy Minister of Defense Aruna Jayasekara announced in Parliament today (23) that the government has taken steps to release 706 acres of government lands previously under military use in the Northern and Eastern Provinces by 2025.

He stated that in the Northern Province, 86.24 acres of private lands and 586 acres of lands under military use have been released. In the Eastern Province, 34.58 acres of government lands have been handed back.

The Deputy Minister further explained that the land release process was carried out after providing the necessary information to the Security Council and the Security Sector Council, ensuring that national security considerations were taken into account.
