The Natural Hazards Early Warning Centre of the Department of Meteorology has urged naval and fishing communities to exercise caution as the low-level atmospheric disturbance to the east of the island has developed into a low-pressure area.

According to the Department, the system is expected to intensify further and move northwestward, approaching Sri Lanka in the coming days.

Wind speeds in sea areas under the “Advisory” category are forecast to increase to 55–65 kmph at times, accompanied by heavy thundershowers, making those areas rough or very rough.

Fishermen have been advised to remain alert and avoid venturing into these dangerous sea areas until conditions improve.
