Traffic on the Upcountry railway route was severely disrupted today following the collapse of an earth mound between Balana and Upper Kotte, which led to the derailment of a train near the Upper Kotte railway station.
In addition to the railway damage, roads near the line have collapsed in two locations, compounding the disruption. As a result, 18 train services were cancelled today.
Authorities have now announced that four trains scheduled for tomorrow morning from Kandy and Matale to Colombo Fort and Beliatta will also be cancelled:
- 04.30 am — Kandy to Colombo Fort
- 04.50 am — Matale to Colombo Fort
- 05.00 am — Kandy to Beliatta
- 06.15 am — Kandy to Colombo Fort
Passengers are urged to monitor railway updates and make alternative travel arrangements.
