Consumers will be required to pay for plastic bags and containers provided during purchases starting November 1, 2025, as part of the government’s move to reduce single-use plastics, the Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) said.
According to the new regulation, small polythene bags — commonly known as “silly bags” — will no longer be issued free of charge at shops and supermarkets. Instead, a fee will be charged for each bag or container provided to customers.
Authorities are encouraging the public to switch to reusable bags and containers ahead of the implementation date to minimize costs and support the national effort to reduce plastic waste.
The measure aims to curb the widespread use of disposable plastics and promote environmentally friendly consumer habits across the country.
