An emergency inspection of restaurants and bakeries in Hatton city was carried out on Friday (18) ahead of the Deepavali celebrations, with legal action set to be taken against several business owners for maintaining unsanitary conditions.
The inspection was conducted by Public Health Inspectors (PHIs) from the Ambagamuwa, Maskeliya, and Bhagawanthalawa Medical Officers of Health (MOH) offices, together with the PHI of the Hatton-Dickoya Municipal Council.
According to Maskeliya Medical Officer of Health S. Chandrarajan, nearly 50 establishments were inspected during the operation. He said legal action will be initiated before the Hatton Magistrate’s Court against a number of bakery and restaurant owners found to be operating under unhygienic conditions.
In addition, 14 days have been granted to certain establishments to rectify identified deficiencies.
The inspection was carried out with the aim of ensuring that food and beverages served to customers during the Deepavali festive season are clean and safe for consumption.
