During a field inspection carried out yesterday (17) in the Sengamuwa Wewa area of the Lahugala National Park, wildlife officers removed nearly 100 animal traps believed to have been set to capture wild animals.
According to officials, the operation, which lasted for about three hours, was part of an ongoing effort to curb illegal hunting and poaching activities within the park.
Wildlife officers said that further operations are being conducted to locate and remove additional traps, while an investigation has been launched to identify and arrest those responsible for setting them.
Authorities said that such illegal activities pose a serious threat to protected wildlife species, and surveillance in the area has now been intensified to prevent future incidents.
