Sri Lanka will host the World Powerlifting Championship 2025 for the first time, marking a historic milestone for the nation and South Asia. The event, organised by World Powerlifting Lanka, will take place from November 28 to 30 at Vivanta by Taj – Airport Garden, Seeduwa.
The championship is expected to attract 300 athletes, coaches, and officials from over 30 countries. Speaking at a Colombo briefing, Lt. Commander Priyadarshana Jayawardhana, Secretary of World Powerlifting Lanka, highlighted the event’s global significance and its role in promoting strength, discipline, and inclusivity.
World Powerlifting Lanka President Dr. Ruwan Paul, an international power-lifter and entrepreneur, emphasised the organisation’s commitment to drug-free competition and developing a strong, internationally recognised Sri Lankan powerlifting community.
The organisers also plan to expand the sport island-wide by establishing at least 25 affiliated clubs, aiming to nurture future champions from every district.
