Minister of Fisheries, Aquatic and Ocean Resources Ramalingam Chandraseker has asserted that no individual, regardless of power or influence, can evade the law, emphasizing the government’s firm stance against organised crime and drug trafficking.
Speaking at a media briefing at the Ministry in Colombo yesterday (15), Minister Chandraseker said the government had pledged to dismantle underworld networks and curb the narcotics trade, providing the Police and security agencies with the necessary resources to act effectively.
“Several leading figures in the drug trade have been arrested and imprisoned, while others who fled the country were apprehended through coordinated international operations,” he said. Highlighting recent successes, the Minister noted that even those who opened fire inside court premises and escaped have now been arrested in Nepal, marking unprecedented international cooperation.
Addressing earlier criticisms from opposition parties, Minister Chandraseker said the government had proven its determination and capability. “There was a time when the opposition accused the government of being unable to control shootings and violent crimes. But today, no criminal, regardless of their connections, can escape the arm of the law,” he added.
The Minister also highlighted that previous administrations had allowed some criminals political protection, a practice that no longer exists. “There is no room for lawbreakers under our administration. Those involved in public property looting or corruption will face justice, including those linked to the Central Bank bond scam, such as Arjuna Mahendran,” he affirmed.
Minister Chandraseker concluded by reiterating the government’s commitment to strengthening law enforcement, restoring public confidence, and ensuring justice is delivered without fear or favour.
