The Cabinet of Ministers yesterday granted approval for the transfer of two government-owned lands to support infrastructure development at the Wayamba University of Sri Lanka and the University of Fine Arts.
Accordingly, a proposal presented by the Hon. Prime Minister, in her capacity as the Minister of Education, Higher Education and Professional Education, was approved to transfer an 80-perch plot of land located in the Kurunegala West Grama Niladhari Division of the Kurunegala Divisional Secretariat Division to the Sri Lanka Wayamba University.
The land has been identified as a suitable location for the construction of a hostel for students of the university’s Faculty of Medicine, who currently conduct their clinical training at the Teaching Hospital, Kurunegala. As the university does not have hostel facilities in close proximity to the hospital, students have been compelled to find accommodation on their own. The proposed hostel is expected to provide safe and convenient lodging for the three batches of medical students undergoing clinical training.
In a separate decision, the Cabinet also approved the transfer of 0.6277 hectares of government-owned land at No. 46, Horton Place, Colombo 07, where the Faculty of Visual Arts of the University of Fine Arts is situated, to the university as a free grant.
The transfer, made under Section 6(1) of the Government Land Ordinance, will grant the university legal ownership of the property, enabling it to enhance its physical facilities and improve the academic and practical learning environment for the approximately 643 students enrolled in the Faculty of Visual Arts.
