Attorney General Parinda Ranasinghe has sent a detailed letter to the Secretary to the President analyzing the Supreme Court verdict in the MV X-Press Pearl case.
The Attorney General’s Department said the letter was prepared after a comprehensive study of the 361-page judgment delivered by the Supreme Court.
The Department has also requested the President to convene a discussion on the verdict and the measures required to recover compensation from the X-Press Pearl Shipping Company.
According to the Attorney General’s Department, several directives have been issued in the judgment, and the proposed discussion aims to brief the President and relevant authorities while reaching an agreement on the next steps.
The Supreme Court recently ordered the shipping company to pay US$1 billion in compensation within one year for the extensive environmental damage caused by the 2021 shipwreck off the coast of Colombo.
The Attorney General’s Department added that it is also examining the process of securing the full compensation amount.
