The Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka (PUCSL) announced that its final decision on the proposed electricity tariff revision will be released on Tuesday, October 14.
PUCSL Director Jayanath Herath stated that the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) has proposed a 6.8 percent increase in electricity tariffs.
Commenting on the proposal, Nandana Udayakumara, Vice President of the CEB Technical Engineers and Supervisors Association, said that the tariff hike has become necessary due to the authorities’ failure to effectively implement restructuring programs within the board.
Meanwhile, M. D. R. Athula, Chairman of the Electricity Users' Association, warned that the board’s operational costs, which currently stand at Rs. 1.5 million, could rise to nearly Rs. 10 million as a result of the division of the Electricity Board.
The PUCSL’s final decision is expected to determine the direction of the country’s electricity pricing for the coming months.
