The government is determined to position Sri Lanka as the world’s leading sapphire hub, Minister of Industry and Entrepreneurship Development Sunil Handunnetti announced yesterday (10).
He made this statement while addressing the third International Research Conference organized by the Gem and Jewellery Research and Training Institute, held at the Colombo Foundation Institute.
The Gem and Jewellery Research and Training Institute, which functions under the Ministry of Industry and Entrepreneurship Development, plays a vital role in advancing the gem and jewellery industry through gem surveys, scientific research, machinery development, technical and advisory services, professional training, and publications.
This year’s conference, themed “Advancement of the Recent Technologies in the Gem and Jewellery Industry,” focused on promoting the industrial application of research findings and new technologies within the sector.
A total of 23 local and international research papers were presented across three technical sessions and a poster session, covering topics such as technological innovations, tourism related to the gem and jewellery sector, environmental and socio-economic aspects, archaeology, gem deposit assessment, ethical practices, sustainable mining, synthetic gems, and global trade trends.
Minister Handunnetti emphasized that Sri Lanka’s rich gem heritage, combined with scientific innovation and sustainable practices, can elevate the nation’s status as a global centre for sapphires and fine jewellery.
