The Department has urged the general public to take necessary precautions to minimize the risk of damage caused by lightning and temporary strong winds associated with thundershowers.

The Department of Meteorology forecasts showers or thundershowers at several places across the Eastern, Central, Uva, Southern, and Sabaragamuwa Provinces, as well as in Polonnaruwa, Mullaittivu, Kilinochchi, and Jaffna Districts after 1.00 p.m.

A few other areas of the island may also experience showers or thundershowers during the afternoon or evening, while Western and Southern Provinces could see light showers in the morning.

Misty conditions are expected in some areas of the Sabaragamuwa, Central, and Uva Provinces during the morning hours.

Rain Condition:

Showers will occur at several places in the sea areas off the coast extending from Colombo to Pottuvil via Galle and Hambantota.

Showers or thundershowers may also develop in the sea areas off the coast from Kankasanthurai to Pottuvil via Trincomalee and Batticaloa during the evening or night.

Winds:

Winds will be south-westerly or variable, with speeds ranging between 25–35 kmph.

Wind speeds may increase up to 45 kmph at times, particularly in the sea areas off the coast extending from Matara to Pottuvil via Hambantota.

State of the Sea:

Sea areas off Matara to Pottuvil via Hambantota will be moderate at times, while other sea areas around the island will remain slight.

However, temporary strong gusty winds and very rough seas can be expected during thundershowers.
