A Sub-Inspector and a Sergeant attached to the Anuradhapura Police have been suspended following the escape of a suspect from police custody yesterday morning.
According to police sources, the Sub-Inspector was in charge of all duties at the police station at the time of the incident, while the Sergeant had been assigned to prison duty.
The 22-year-old suspect, a resident of Samagipura in Matale, had been arrested on Tuesday (7) for allegedly assaulting a person, robbing Rs. 30,000, and possessing a quantity of heroin.
He managed to escape from custody on Tuesday night, ahead of being produced before court on Wednesday (8) morning.
Further investigations into the incident are being conducted under the supervision of Chief Inspector Jayaweera Rajapaksa and Senior Superintendent of Police Thilina Hewapathirana of the Anuradhapura Police Division in Kandy.
