Minister of Transport, Highways, Ports and Civil Aviation Bimal Ratnayake addressed Parliament today regarding delays in issuing new vehicle number plates.
He stated that as of September 30, 2025, 165,512 vehicle number plates had not yet been issued.
The Minister explained that the delay is due to the incorporation of seven special security features in the new plates. Testing of these features was assigned to the University of Moratuwa, which completed only six of the tests in three months. The seventh feature had to be tested internationally, causing further delays. He emphasized that these measures aim to enhance vehicle safety.
Additionally, Minister Ratnayake assured that the issuance of new driving licenses will be resolved by October 18.
