A former army soldier who had been in remand custody for nearly seven months over the alleged rape of a female trainee specialist at the Anuradhapura Teaching Hospital was released on bail yesterday (06) by Anuradhapura Magistrate Nalaka Sanjeewa Jayasuriya.
The court ordered the suspect, a resident of Galnewa, to be released on a cash bail of Rs. 50,000 and two sureties of Rs. 500,000 each. One of the sureties must be a close relative of the suspect, as directed by the Magistrate.
The court also imposed a foreign travel ban on the suspect and warned him not to interfere with witnesses or ongoing investigations.
However, despite being granted bail in the rape case, the suspect remains in remand custody in connection with another case involving the possession of a live hand grenade.
Police informed the court that the investigation extracts related to the alleged rape have been forwarded to the Attorney General’s Department. The court further ordered the mobile phone belonging to the victim, which had been recovered after being allegedly hidden by the suspect, to be sent to the Government Analyst for examination.
