At least six people, including two young women, have died in a series of road accidents reported from several parts of the country on Friday (04), police said.
The fatal incidents occurred in the Horana, Pinnawala, Thirukkovil, Katuwana, and Central Camp police divisions.
In Kananwila on the Horana–Maharagama road, a 24-year-old man and his 21-year-old wife from Kiriwatthuduwa were killed when their tricycle lost control, overturned, and collided with an oncoming lorry. Both victims succumbed to their injuries after being admitted to the Horana Hospital.
Another accident took place near the 8th kilometre post on the Hatton–Balangoda road, where a motorcycle traveling from Balangoda towards Pinnawala collided with a bus. The female passenger, a 23-year-old woman from Aranayake, died after being admitted to the Balangoda Hospital.
In Thirukkovil, a cab traveling along the Vinayagapuram–Pottuvil road collided with a bicycle, fatally injuring a 70-year-old man from Nayagapuram. He died after being admitted to the Thirukkovil Hospital.
Meanwhile, in Katuwana, a three-wheeler overturned near the Tundola Bridge on the Siyarapitiya–Welipitiya road after the driver lost control. The 66-year-old driver from Urubokka died while receiving treatment at the Embilipitiya Hospital, though four passengers survived with injuries.
Another fatal accident was reported in the Central Camp area, where a motorcyclist lost control and struck a pedestrian walking along the road. The 75-year-old pedestrian from Weeragoda died on the spot, police said.
