The Superintendent of Police in charge of the Mount Lavinia Division has suspended a police sergeant attached to the Badowita Police Station for allegedly providing his official identity card to a drug trafficker.
The incident came to light following a raid by the Central Anti-Corruption Task Force in Panadura Walana on September 30, during which two suspects were arrested in Hirana, Panadura, with 3kg of cocaine valued at around Rs.150 million. One suspect was found in possession of the police sergeant’s identity card.
Investigations revealed that the trafficker had used the card to evade detection at police checkpoints while transporting drugs. It was also disclosed that the sergeant had been seen consuming alcohol with the same trafficker on November 29.
A senior police officer confirmed that the sergeant has been suspended pending further inquiry.
