The Natural Hazards Early Warning Centre of the Department of Meteorology yesterday issued a warm weather advisory for the districts of Polonnaruwa, Batticaloa, Ampara, Monaragala, and Hambantota.

Residents in these areas have been urged to take necessary precautions to minimize the impact of the prevailing warm conditions.

According to the Department, the heat index forecast is based on relative humidity and maximum temperature, indicating the temperature felt on the human body rather than the actual maximum temperature. The forecast is prepared daily for the following 24-hour period using global numerical weather prediction data.

The advisory further stated that the assessment of heat index effects on the human body has been developed in consultation with the Ministry of Health and Indigenous Medical Services.
