Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) MP Namal Rajapaksa has urged the government to carry out a fair and comprehensive investigation into the death of former rugby player Wasim Thajudeen, cautioning against using the case for political gain.
He said politicising the case would amount to an insult to Thajudeen’s memory. His comments came in response to recent police revelations that an organized crime figure known as Kajja who was murdered in Middeniya earlier this year had been in a vehicle that pursued Thajudeen prior to his death in 2012.
Speaking to the media, Rajapaksa drew parallels between the renewed focus on Thajudeen’s death and past politically driven campaigns such as the so-called ICE Week and Ranil Week, alleging that some were attempting to exploit the case for personal advantage.
However, he stressed that all aspects of the incident must be investigated in detail. Commenting on the emergence of Kajja as a figure linked to the case, Rajapaksa said the authorities should establish the individual’s residence, associates, and movements.
“Without turning this into a political spectacle, the government must ensure a proper investigation is carried out to determine whether Thajudeen faced any injustice. Failing to do so would itself be an injustice to his memory,” he said.
