World Children’s Day and World Elders’ Day are being commemorated today (01) across the country, with special programs organized to highlight the importance of protecting children and respecting elders.
This year, World Children’s Day is celebrated under the theme “Protect with Love – Let’s Win the World”, while World Elders’ Day is marked under the theme “A Generation that Created – A Generation to Protect.”
The main commemorative ceremony for Children’s Day is being held under the patronage of the Minister of Women and Child Affairs, Saroja Paulraj.
Meanwhile, the World Elders’ Day celebration and the official launch of the National Policy for Elders in Sri Lanka will take place at Suhurupaya, under the patronage of Prime Minister Harini Amarasuriya. The event will also be attended by Minister of Rural Development, Social Security and Community Empowerment, Upali Pannila, and State Minister Vasantha Piyathissa.
In parallel with these observances, a National Children’s Day Week was conducted from September 25, featuring various awareness and welfare programs for children. An Elders’ Week has also been declared from today (01) until October 7, with activities focused on promoting the well-being and dignity of senior citizens.
