The National Transport Medical Institute (NTMI) has introduced a new system enabling citizens to obtain driving licenses without having to visit a motor transport office, the Minister of Transport, Highways, Ports, and Civil Aviation, Bimal Ratnayake, announced today
Speaking at a ceremony at the NTMI in Nugegoda, held to mark the first anniversary of the National People’s Powers Government, Minister Ratnayake said that under the previous system, applicants had to first obtain a medical report at the institute and then visit a motor transport office to receive their driving license.
“From today, people can obtain temporary driving licenses directly at the Transport Medical Institute by paying the required fees on-site,” he said. “This will save citizens time, money, and effort, as obtaining a temporary license now takes only about seven minutes, with plans to reduce it to five minutes in the near future.”
The Minister added that the new system would gradually be extended to other parts of the country, aiming to provide a more convenient and efficient service to the public.
The event was attended by the Commissioner General of Motor Transport, the Chairperson of the National Transport Medical Institute, Arosha Vidyabhushana, and senior officials from related institutions.
