Industry and Entrepreneurship Development Minister Sunil Hadunnetti has expressed regret over his recent statement in which he mistakenly mentioned the Nobel Prize instead of the Guinness World Record.
In a video posted on his Facebook account today, the Minister said, “It was a mistake. I did not do it intentionally. If any party was inconvenienced due to my statement, I express my regrets to them.”
On Monday, Hadunnetti had claimed that Sri Lanka had “won the Nobel Prize for tea” after the country entered the Guinness World Records for producing the world’s most expensive tea. Speaking to the media at the time, the Minister appeared unaware of the Nobel Prize’s actual significance, but described the moment as a proud achievement for the nation, highlighting the unmatched quality of Ceylon tea and its place in the global luxury market.
Sri Lanka recently entered the Guinness World Records when the New Vithanakande Tea Factory received recognition for producing the world’s most expensive tea. The record was set with its premium Ceylon Black Tea (FFExSp), which was sold in Japan for LKR 252,500 per kilogram (approximately ¥125,000).
