The Western Province Road Passenger Transport Authority has announced that new regulations will come into effect from October 1, introducing fines for ticketless travel on private buses and resuming the registration of passenger three-wheelers.
According to Authority officials, all passengers on private buses will be required to obtain a valid ticket. Passengers found traveling without a ticket will face a fine of Rs. 100 in addition to paying double the bus fare. Conductors who fail to issue tickets will continue to face a fine of Rs. 750 and must undergo mandatory training. Officials added that penalties may be revised further in the future.
Meanwhile, the Authority confirmed that the registration and licensing of passenger three-wheelers will resume under the provisions of the 2002 regulations. All three-wheelers engaged in passenger transport must therefore be registered with the Authority and carry valid operating permits.
