Sri Lankan students will now gain free access to Google’s advanced AI platform Gemini and a range of premium student benefits, Deputy Minister of Digital Economy Eranga Weeraratne announced today (29).
The landmark announcement was made at the Bandaranaike Memorial International Conference Hall (BMICH), Colombo, during the first-ever National AI Expo & Conference.
This is a game changer,” Deputy Minister Weeraratne declared. “It will level the playing field and put our students on par with anyone, anywhere in the world.”
The initiative is expected to significantly strengthen Sri Lanka’s capacity in artificial intelligence development and digital literacy, empowering the next generation to innovate, tackle complex challenges, and compete globally.
Mr.Weeraratne also underscored the importance of ethical responsibility in the use of AI tools. “This is not just about using AI,” he stressed. “It’s about mastering it — with wisdom, compassion, and purpose.”
The program is widely seen as a milestone in Sri Lanka’s digital transformation journey, paving the way for a more inclusive and future-ready knowledge economy.
