The Colombo Municipal Council (CMC) Fire Service Department is expanding its workforce and facilities to improve fire safety and emergency response across the capital, Acting Chief Fire Officer P.D.K.A. Wilson said.
He said the CMC had recently approved the recruitment of additional firefighters, a long-pending request amid rising safety concerns in Colombo’s densely built and often unplanned urban areas.
The recent fire incident at First Cross Street, Pettah, highlighted the urgency of strengthening fire response, bringing renewed public attention to the city’s preparedness.
According to Wilson, 35 recruits, whose appointments had been delayed since interviews held in 2021, were formally absorbed into the service last week and are currently undergoing training.
“In addition, another 60 new cadres will be recruited into the Department in the near future,” he said..
