The Ministry of Digital Economy announced that discussions are underway to abolish additional charges levied on debit and credit card payments.
According to the Ministry, initial talks were held with the Ministry of Finance, the Central Bank of Sri Lanka (CBSL), and the Inland Revenue Department (IRD) to review the current payment system and explore solutions.
The discussions also focused on measures the government could implement to offset losses borne by consumers when making transactions via cards.
Furthermore, the Ministry noted that Sri Lanka is gradually moving toward a cashless economy, with future transactions expected to shift primarily to QR code–based payments through mobile devices.
