Inspector General of Police (IGP) Priyantha Weerasooriya has instructed his officers to implement strict measures to accurately identify personnel deployed for VIP events, in order to thwart attempts by criminals or radical elements to infiltrate security operations while disguised in uniforms.
In an internal circular issued to senior officers this week, the Police Chief warned that given the prevailing threat environment, individuals dressed in the uniforms of the tri-forces, police, or other agencies could attempt to gain access to high-security venues to carry out unlawful acts, including attacks that endanger lives.
The IGP stressed that officers assigned to duties such as security and traffic control at functions attended by the President, Prime Minister, ministers, and other dignitaries must be identified in advance and their credentials thoroughly verified.
He further instructed that wristbands, badges, or other symbols issued to officers for identification within security zones should be managed with extra caution and precision.
Citing the recent incident in which a gunman disguised as a lawyer shot a suspect inside a courtroom, the IGP underscored that such risks cannot be ignored. He directed all officers to treat this matter with special attention and take all necessary precautions to prevent similar breaches in the future.
