A media briefing was held today (20) to update the public on the special joint operations currently underway across the country.
The operation is being conducted under police supervision with the participation of the Sri Lanka Police, the Special Task Force, the Police Narcotics Bureau, and the Tri-Forces.
According to Police Media Spokesperson, Assistant Superintendent of Police F.U. Wootler, narcotics seizures made so far in 2025 include 955 kilograms of heroin, 1,422 kilograms of crystal methamphetamine (Ice), 471 kilograms of hashish, 29 kilograms of cocaine, 13,773 kilograms of cannabis, and 3.5 million illicit pills.
Authorities have also recovered 61 T-56 assault rifles, 62 pistols, 40 revolvers, and 1,721 other firearms during these operations.
From January 1, 2025, to date, police have arrested 328 suspects in connection with shootings, including 38 gunmen, 27 drivers, and 263 individuals accused of aiding and abetting such incidents.
In total, 51 million people have been subjected to thorough checks during these operations, leading to the arrest of 14,000 individuals for questioning. These interrogations helped identify and apprehend 4,630 suspects linked to various crimes such as rape, theft, fraud, robbery, organized criminal activities, and breaches of trust.
Meanwhile, 45,490 individuals with outstanding court warrants and 30,884 individuals with open warrants have been taken into custody this year.
Special traffic operations also resulted in 46,910 drunk drivers being prosecuted, while 2,404 motorists were charged for reckless, dangerous, or speeding offenses.
Police emphasized that the ongoing integrated operations aim to dismantle drug networks, curb organized crime, and ensure public safety across Sri Lanka.
