A police constable driver attached to the Police CCTV Division has been arrested for stealing money from fellow officers' wallets and bags. He was caught in the act while taking Rs. 100 from a colleague’s wallet.
The arrest follows multiple complaints of missing cash at the Police CCTV Division, located within the Colombo DIG’s office premises. In response, a hidden camera was installed to identify the culprit.
Footage from the surveillance setup captured the constable opening a wallet left on a table and stealing cash. He was later arrested in his room at the Maradana Police Station, where officers also discovered a quantity of "ice" (crystal methamphetamine) in his possession.
The suspect was produced before the Aluthkade Magistrate’s Court on September and was released on bail. Meanwhile, the Deputy Inspector General (DIG) in charge of the CCTV Division has ordered his immediate interdiction pending further investigation.
