The Supreme Court today granted leave to proceed with a Fundamental Rights (FR) petition challenging an alleged unpaid electricity bill of Rs. 2.6 million related to the Weeraketiya residence of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa.
The petition, filed by Attorney-at-Law Vijitha Kumara—representing the Polonnaruwa Bar Association—seeks an order directing the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) to produce all relevant documentation regarding the outstanding bill. The electricity consumption in question is allegedly linked to a series of wedding receptions held for Parliamentarian Namal Rajapaksa around September 12, 2019.
A two-judge bench comprising Chief Justice Preethi Padman Surasena and Justice Achala Wengappuli granted leave to proceed, noting the petitioner's claim of a violation of Fundamental Rights under Article 12(1) of the Constitution, which guarantees equality before the law.
The petition names the CEB, its Chairman, the Auditor General, former Power and Energy Minister Kanchana Wijesekera, MP Namal Rajapaksa, former President Mahinda Rajapaksa, MP D.V. Chanaka, and several others as respondents.
