The Government of the Netherlands has extended an additional grant of €730,000 to support Sri Lanka’s ongoing rural bridge development initiative, aimed at enhancing connectivity and living standards in underserved communities.
Under this program, Sri Lanka is constructing 162 rural bridges across the island to improve access to essential services, markets, and schools. According to project officials, as of September 2025, nearly 96% of the project has been completed, with 151 bridges already built. The remaining bridges are expected to be completed by 2026.
The project is financed through a combination of concessional loans and grants. Coöperatieve Rabobank U.A. has provided a loan of €41.8 million (75% of the cost), while the Investment International Bank contributed €13.9 million as a grant (25%).
Recognizing Sri Lanka’s economic challenges, the Netherlands increased its support in 2024 with an additional €5.3 million, bringing its total grant contribution to €18.9 million. This now covers 37% of the project’s overall cost.
Authorities emphasized that the rural bridge program is a key infrastructure initiative designed to promote long-term development, boost local economies, and improve mobility for rural communities across the country.
