The Department of Meteorology has forecast showers or thundershowers in most parts of the island after 1.00 p.m. today (09). At certain locations, heavy rainfall of about 100 mm is likely.

In addition, a few showers are expected in the Western Province as well as in Galle and Matara districts during the day.

The Met Department has advised the public to take necessary precautions to minimize damages caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning that may accompany thundershowers.

Sea Area Forecast

Showers are likely in several places in the sea areas off the coast extending from Puttalam to Matara via Colombo and Galle.

Winds in the sea areas from Colombo to Pottuvil via Galle and Hambantota will be westerly to south-westerly with speeds of 30–40 kmph, which could increase up to 50 kmph at times. In other sea areas around the island, winds will be south-westerly or variable in direction, with speeds between 20–30 kmph.

The sea areas from Colombo to Pottuvil via Galle and Hambantota may become fairly rough at times. The Met Department also warned that temporarily strong gusty winds and very rough seas could be expected during thundershowers.
