The Supreme Court has scheduled February 12, 2026, to hear a series of petitions challenging the appointment of Deshabandu Tennakoon as the Inspector General of Police (IGP).

The petitions claim that the appointment, made by former President Ranil Wickremesinghe, was unconstitutional.

The matter was taken up today before a three-judge bench comprising Chief Justice Preethi Padman Surasena, Justice Mahinda Samayawardena, and Justice Arjuna Obeysekara. The bench ordered that all related petitions be heard together on February 12.

A total of nine petitions have been filed, including those submitted by His Eminence Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith, the Young Journalists Association, and several other individuals and organizations.
