A few showers are expected in the Western and Sabaragamuwa provinces as well as in the districts of Galle, Matara, Kandy, Nuwara-Eliya, and Jaffna. Showers or thundershowers may also occur at a few places in the Uva province and in Ampara, Batticaloa, and Mullaitivu districts, particularly after 2.00 p.m.
The Department of Meteorology says that several areas of the island are likely to experience showers today (05).
Fairly strong winds of 30-40 kmph may occur at times over the western slopes of the central hills, and in North-central, North-western, and Hambantota districts.
Meanwhile, the Met. Department notes that the sun is directly overhead Sri Lanka from August 28 to September 07 due to its apparent southward motion. Today (05), the sun will be directly over Nalluruwa, Balangoda, Rathmalawinna, Buduruwagala, and Panama at around 12.09 noon.
Sea Areas Around the Island
The Met. Department further states that a few showers may occur in the sea areas off the coast extending from Colombo to Matara via Galle.
Winds will be westerly to south-westerly with speeds of 30-40 kmph. However, wind speeds could increase up to 50-55 kmph at times in the sea areas off the coast extending from Chilaw to Mannar via Puttalam and from Matara to Pottuvil via Hambantota. In the sea areas from Kankasanthurai to Vakarai via Trincomalee, wind speeds may reach 45-50 kmph.
The sea areas off the coast from Chilaw to Mannar via Puttalam and from Matara to Pottuvil via Hambantota will be rough at times, while the seas from Kankasanthurai to Vakarai via Trincomalee may be fairly rough.
The wave height is expected to rise to about 2.0–2.5 meters in the sea areas off the coast extending from Galle to Pottuvil via Hambantota.
