The Cabinet has approved a proposal by the Minister of Justice and National Integration to accelerate investigations into complaints of missing persons, under the Office of Missing Persons (Establishment, Administration and Functioning) Act, No. 14 of 2016.
The Office of Missing Persons (OMP), established under the Act, is tasked with investigating cases of individuals reported missing and issuing reports to their relatives. To date, the OMP has received 16,966 complaints, of which 10,517 remain pending investigation.
Under the new initiative, a special project will be implemented to complete all pending investigations and related duties by the end of 2027, with the aim of delivering justice to affected families.
As part of the project, 25 sub-committees will be appointed, comprising 75 qualified individuals — including retired judges, senior administrative officers, and lawyers — to undertake the necessary investigative and reporting work.
