A devastating fire, allegedly set by an unidentified individual or group, completely destroyed the Bondila Rock Mountain located near the world-famous Demodara railway station on Tuesday (26), our correspondent reports.

According to eyewitnesses, the night train heading towards Badulla had to pass through flames that surrounded the railway line. The fire, which broke out near the tracks, spread uncontrollably across the mountain, making it difficult to bring under control.

Tragically, the blaze also damaged the Ananda Bodhi tree that had been planted at the summit of the mountain.

Environmental damage has been severe, with large numbers of endemic animals and birds perishing in the fire, while several natural springs in the area have also been affected.

Authorities have yet to confirm the cause of the fire or the group responsible, but investigations are underway.
