Large crowds gathered in multiple locations across Colombo today in a show of support for former President Ranil Wickremesinghe, as his legal case is scheduled to be heard at the Fort Magistrate’s Court.
Accordingly, supporters assembled near the National Hospital, the Fort Magistrate's Court, and the Presidential Secretariat, responding to a call by the Joint Opposition to rally in solidarity with the former leader.
In anticipation of the hearing, police have closed access roads to the Fort Magistrate’s Court, effectively preventing crowds from entering the premises. The situation remains tense but under control, according to initial reports.
Deputy Leader of the United National Party (UNP), Ruwan Wijewardene, addressed the public earlier today, urging demonstrators to remain peaceful and respect law and order.
“I urge everyone to look at their conscience at this moment and refrain from disturbing the peace, law and order,” Wijewardene said. He also expressed gratitude to those rallying for Wickremesinghe’s release, adding, “Ranil Wickremesinghe, who took over the country during a crisis, is in prison today.”
The case against the former president has attracted significant political and public attention, with many awaiting the outcome of today’s proceedings.
