Former President Ranil Wickremesinghe is unlikely to be produced before the Fort Magistrate’s Court today, as he remains under medical observation in the intensive care unit (ICU) of the Colombo National Hospital, according to Prison Media Spokesperson Jagath Weerasinghe.
Wickremesinghe was arrested by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) on August 22 under the Public Property Act, in connection with allegations of misappropriating state funds. He was remanded until today following his arrest. However, he was admitted to the prison hospital shortly after being remanded and later transferred to the ICU on medical advice.
Weerasinghe stated that a panel of five specialist doctors is currently monitoring the former president’s condition and will provide a formal recommendation on whether he is medically fit to appear in court.
“If the Magistrate issues an order to produce the former President via ZOOM or any other method, the Department of Prisons is ready to make the necessary arrangements,” he added.
The case is scheduled to be taken up before the Fort Magistrate’s Court later today.
