Colombo National Hospital Deputy Director Dr. Rukshan Bellana says former President Ranil Wickremesinghe, who was admitted to the hospital, is being treated under strict medical supervision.
Wickremesinghe was transferred from the prison hospital after suffering from dehydration, along with changes in blood levels and other clinical symptoms. Dr. Bellana said the condition was likely caused by prolonged exposure to power outages and inadequate water intake while waiting for several hours in court.
“I have just seen the former President. He is dehydrated, and there are some changes in his blood and other signs,” Dr. Bellana told reporters. “We need to keep him on strict rest for at least three days and continue treatment. Without this, heart issues, kidney problems, and other complications could arise.”
He added that multiple teams of specialist doctors are closely monitoring Wickremesinghe and expressed confidence that he would recover within two to three days if treatment is maintained. However, he warned that any lapse in care could lead to further health risks.
