The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has recommended to Inspector General of Police (IGP) Priyantha Weerasuriya that the Colombo Deputy Inspector General (DIG) be immediately transferred to ensure transparency in the ongoing investigation into the controversial Anuradhapura treasure hunt.
The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has recommended to Inspector General of Police (IGP) Priyantha Weerasuriya that the Colombo Deputy Inspector General (DIG) be immediately transferred to ensure transparency in the ongoing investigation into the controversial Anuradhapura treasure hunt.
Police sources said the recommendation was made following preliminary inquiries conducted by the CID on August 18, under the IGP's directive.
Investigators have found that the DIG was aware his wife was visiting the temple premises—where the alleged illegal excavation took place—for a purported religious observance. It has also been confirmed that the DIG was in Anuradhapura on the same day.
Further, the CID has obtained information indicating that the DIG’s husband had visited the site prior to the arrest of his wife and eight others by the Anuradhapura Police, in connection with the alleged treasure hunting operation. CID officers are currently reviewing CCTV footage to verify his presence at the site and are also conducting a telephone network analysis to determine any possible links between the DIG’s husband and the other suspects.
