In a letter to Prime Minister and Education Minister Harini Amarasuriya, the BASL proposed introducing Law or a related subject as a compulsory component at the primary level and as an elective at the G.C.E. Advanced Level.
Welcoming ongoing education sector reforms, the BASL said legal education at the school level would help produce responsible and informed citizens.
“Many countries have already introduced Law into their school curricula, recognizing it as a fundamental building block of civic engagement and democratic participation,” it noted.
The BASL also pledged its full support to the Ministry of Education in designing and reviewing the curriculum to ensure academic rigor and alignment with Sri Lanka’s legal and cultural context.
The letter was signed by BASL President Rajeev Amarasuriya and Secretary Chathura Galhena.
