A young man has been remanded until September 3 by Colombo Additional Magistrate Manjula Ratnayake over allegations of threatening to release nude videos of his girlfriend on social media.
The woman filed a complaint with the Children and Women’s Bureau, stating that she had been in a romantic relationship with the suspect. During their time together, she consented to being filmed during a private encounter.
However, she later received threatening WhatsApp messages from Kumaran, who allegedly said he would publish the videos online.
Following investigations, Kumaran was arrested and produced in court under Section 2(a) of the Obscene Publications Act No. 22 of 1983, which prohibits the possession of obscene content with the intent to distribute.
Defence Counsel Udayanga Munaveera argued that the videos had been recorded with mutual consent and requested bail for his client.
The Magistrate, however, rejected the bail application and ordered the suspect to be remanded until September 3.
